Guide to Threads character limits for posts, replies, and bio, plus tips for effective Threads content.
Threads allows up to 500 characters per post. This places it between X's 280-character limit and Instagram's 2,200-character caption limit. Threads is designed for text-based conversations, offering more room than X while keeping posts concise.
On Threads, most characters count as 1, similar to Instagram. URLs, mentions, and hashtags all count toward the character limit. Emojis generally count as 1 character. Threads does not shorten URLs like X does, so long URLs will consume more of your character allowance.
You can attach up to 10 images or 1 video (up to 5 minutes) per Threads post. Media attachments do not count toward the character limit. You can also add a link preview which doesn't count toward the limit either.
Threads bio: 150 characters (shared with Instagram). Username: same as your Instagram username. Threads profiles are linked to Instagram accounts, so your profile information is largely shared between the two platforms.
With 500 characters, you have enough room to make a complete point but still need to be deliberate with your words. Start with a strong hook. Use line breaks for readability. For longer content, create a thread (multiple connected posts). Check your character count with PostLen before posting.
